The Dark Side of Social Media
July 2023
Abstract
This essay presents a critical analysis of technological advancement and its societal consequences through an examination of Black Mirror’s episode “Nosedive.” Set in a world governed by a pervasive digital rating system, the episode serves as a speculative lens through which contemporary social media culture can be interrogated. By analyzing the narrative arc of the protagonist, Lacie, the essay explores how systems of digital validation reshape identity, regulate social behavior, and erode authentic human connection in a technology-driven society.
Drawing on frameworks such as Technological Determinism, Social Construction of Technology, Actor-Network Theory, and Critical Theory of Technology, the analysis situates “Nosedive” within broader discussions about the reciprocal relationship between society and its technological systems. The episode ultimately serves as a cautionary reflection on digital validation economies, revealing how quantifying social approval can erode genuine connection and subtly restructure the foundations of modern social life.
